It seems once I get going, something bumps me back to stop and think, second guess, and question everything. So I feel the need to stop and ask my readers: If you are sewing a quilt, and it’s just square blocks, and for some reason the blocks don’t want to line up perfectly….do you leave it as is or do you get the seam ripper? I’m thinking the seam ripper, I just hate doing it. I pinned, and I moved and tugged these little squares but they just didn’t want to cooperate. I’m thinking I need to go back with more pins and sew again. So that’s what I’m asking you, to resew or not to resew?

Well, I know what I would do. I would move the blocks so they alternate like bricks. That way you don’t need to match up seams OR make up your strips either vertical or horizontal and then sew a long thin strip between your strips of squares. Once again, no matching of seams needed. I hope that makes sense 🙂 Avis x

I like Oh SewTempting’s advice. I spend way too much time with the seam ripper.
Frustrating….could be you are not hitting an accurate 1/4″ each time. Check your needle and mark on your foot/machine. Don’t just eyeball it. Also; check your method of pressing. PRESS don’t iron. Set your seam with your iron FLAT; then Turn over and press to one side with out stretching your fabric. Secret is a flat iron.
I agree with Oh Sew Tempting; I would off set the blocks if you can’t get them to line up. Save the seam ripper for something tragic,. I would go nuts too and rip rip rip otherwise.
Well, Thank you everyone for your advice! I think I’m going to end up ripping this seam out, (oh the joys of a Tuesday afternoon). I’d like to stagger them, but I’m working with a bare bones crew of fabric for this little blanket. I’m lucky because it’s only one seam so far! It won’t be so painful….right? RIGHT?! 🙂
Hi! Avis had great ideas – as always! If I have small difference, I leave it and think it’s handmade. I use pins when pointing squares. Simple squares can be tricky because the seam allowance should be exactly the same. Good luck what ever you decide! x Teje
