My guild’s annual field trip to shops around middle Tennessee!
How I keep my crafts together.
A look at my scraps and what I do with them.
Did you know this stupid year is almost over?
This blog post is brought to you by the letter M! M–makers, masterminds, markets and Melinda!! Yep, that’s right, its me, Melinda, the newest half of CFS.
I’ll be sure to slap a bio up in a little bit but I wanted to fill you all in on the fun (and exhausting) weekend that Ashley and I had peddling our wares at Handmade Nashville this past weekend.
It’s mid-September here in middle Tennessee and that means that autumn is quickly upon us. School zones are jamming up traffic in the morning, pumpkin spice everything is back in stores, leaves are changing colors, and in Pleasant View (the tiny town where we live) the crisp air smells of tobacco being smoked and prepped. All these things mean my favorite season is finally here! Autumn in Tennessee really is just about as comfy and cozy as anything else I could ever think of. The changing season also meant an awesome weather day for us at Handmade Nashville. Sweaters and scarves and crafts–oh my!
Ashley took CFS to Handmade Nashville at Curvy Yoga in July, but this was the first opportunity we’ve had to bring our collective works together and set up for an event. The foot traffic was a little underwhelming, possibly because there was more than one cultural/heritage festival going on in town the same day, but we had enough customers to keep us entertained and we also had a chance to mix and mingle with the other vendors. Of particular note were two tiny tot bowtie sales men that were there helping out their mom. I’m a sucker for little boys dressed in cardigans with elbow patches and loafers–especially when they also dance to “Billie Jean.” Here are some pictures from our booth:
Despite the small trickle of people through the venue, we did well at the fair and got some positive responses back later in the week with information on other fairs that we may decide to jump in on later in the year. One big one that we’re SUPER excited about is hosted by the Nashville Scene at the Farmer’s Market on Rosa Parks Blvd near downtown. Crafts and Drafts is scheduled to be held on November 7th and will showcase tons of local talent both in the handmade crafting community and the adult beverage community. Anyone who is local to us should definitely put it on their calendars! It will be a great place for you to support small businesses, shop for the holidays, day drink or just come say hi to us–no negatives there =^)
So that’s what’s been up with us this week. Coming down from our craft fair high only to be accepted for Crafts and Drafts, so planning will kick into HIGH gear for that immediately. On a personal note, I did a little exploring today as I am taking advantage of my last couple days of freedom. This coming Monday, I have to have a spinal fusion surgery (I KNOW! I’m not even that old!). I’ll be very restricted for my first 3 weeks post-op, so I took a small adventure today to check out a local quilt shop and an estate sale that I had a hunch might have old-lady sewing paraphernalia. My hunch proved right on the estate sale. I scored some really dope vintage fabrics and notions. Most of the notions are from the 50’s and 60’s and are still in the original cellophane!!! I hoarded them all, of course. Now I must make some kind of shadow box to feature these amazing baubles because they are FAR too cool to sit in a box for another 50 years.
The quilt shop was adorable. The Fabric Shop in Springfield, TN is located right downtown in their historic square across from the old courthouse building. The selection isn’t huge, but the prices are reasonable and I was surprised by some of the novelty prints that they had in stock. It looked as though they might even offer classes in the back of the space. It was definitely worth the trip up, and I got some cute prints for some hoops for Crafts and Drafts and also some fabric I need for the Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt Swap that I’ve signed up for. I’ll definitely go back to have another look the next time I’m in Springfield, especially if they keep those novelty prints in fun rotations! Plus, Ashley didn’t get to go with me–gots to take care of my girl!!
Well that’s about it for now. Tomorrow is guild meeting. Ashley is going (my crippled state can’t handle that much excitement) and then we have time set aside to plan our little hearts out. You’ll be seeing more from me, especially as I recover from surgery. I may just pop in with a funny picture or joke–I’m just that kind of gal.
TTFN! Go make something fun!
Alright! Things have slowly been making progress over here!
I went back to the doctor on Tuesday and got the all clear, and she told me that my “spacey feeling” will go away soon, and it’s just a side effect of having a fever for four days. I can understand that. 😀 What I’d like anyone to take away from this is that if you get a tick bite and it grows larger than what looks normal for a bug bite on you, go to the doctor ASAP.
My middle sister moved back home from Hawaii today!!! -Okay, some people think it’s weird that I say middle sister. What else am I supposed to say? She’s not my eldest sister, she’s in the middle!- I can’t wait to see her and my little niece and nephew the next time I get down there. It’s hard watching family babies growing up through facebook.
So! I have been doing some sewing. I’m literally 3-4 steps away from finishing my sister’s quilted bag. It’s going to be so cute! I have got to get this finished by Saturday so I can take it to my guild meeting for show and tell!!!!! I LOVE SHOW AND TELL!!! 😀 I’ve been sending my sister sneak peek pictures so that she can see, and the responses have typically been “OMG IT’S BEES!!!!” or “squee!!!!” so that’s good. 🙂 I also have a bag that I need to have finished and ready to go by next Friday (holy crap!), so I’m about to get really busy making up for lost time! I also really need to get some new things in my shop soon. I got all that cute pink fabric and I have barely done anything with it so far.
Can we talk about this weather? Just for a minute? I have two fans going in my office to keep it cool, because our building is really old and the a/c just isn’t what it used to be. Also, we got an email that asked us to keep our blinds at a 45 degree angle or less to keep the sunlight out…yea this is just completely silly and I can’t make this up. (How am I supposed to see birds doing stupid bird things outside?) So the past two days I’ve worn a skirt to work.
“It’s too hot for pants!!!”
My husband loves this. He thinks I need to wear more girly things and just be more girly. I think I’m plenty girly, but whatevs. It just has been too hot for pants. He also knows my disdain for shorts, (BECAUSE THEY’RE THE WORST!) so he’s just over the moon over there, while I’m just trying to deal with the heat. Don’t get me wrong, I love warm weather, but, hey, this isn’t supposed to be here for like, 2-3 weeks. Maybe I can use this heat to my advantage, and have an excuse to sew myself a new cute skirt? 😀
I hope everyone’s had a much better few weeks than I have! Not boiling up with fever or with heat wave.
Until next time, happy sewing!!
No danger here! 😀
So this past week I’ve been working on some projects. Still not finishing up my rainbow quilt, or even the big brown ugly quilt….just little things instead! I’ve basically got my fingers in my ears going “NANANANANNANANANANANA!” when it comes to finishing my big quilts. How….sad. I’ll get around to it, don’t worry. I always end up back around.
I posted on instagram this wallet that I made from a pattern I found on BurdaStyle and I really wanted to make another one to practice. Lucky for me my friend Meghan really liked it so I decided well I’m just going to make one for her! And I did! I am very happy with the second effort. I can only post a black and white picture because it’s a secret! I mean she knows about it, and it’s in the mail…and I only took a black and white picture…but the colors and things are secret! 😀
My sister…yes that one that never reads my blog…liked my bag I made for myself so much that she sent me some fabric to make one for her. Oh man, y’all. It’s so pretty. Like hard to cut up pretty. And it’s BEES! CUTE LITTLE BEES! *screams and squeals of joy!* (I really love bees….)
So I’ve been working on that. I really should have gotten it done this weekend what it being 3 days and all…but I did not. We looked at a house on Friday that was kind of out there and I got bitten! By TICKS! MORE THAN ONE! Yea, so I’ve been an itchy mess, but I did get some of the sewing done. Probably…have it done this weekend. Hopefully….maybe. I’m really just hoping that these bites are just itchy and not some disease. The last thing I need is some tick disease. Or any disease for that matter. So now I have a doctor’s appointment on Thursday…which is postponing the sewing. Stupid ticks. -_-
Anyhow! I hope everyone is having a lovely tick bite free week!
Until next time! Happy sewing!
Look everyone is always coming up with cute things; WIP Wednesday, tutorial Tuesday, so I’m making it Fabric Friday.
I was really hoping to have my bags at least started by today, but that’s where the postal service gets involved. I was supposed to have my fabric delivered Wednesday, which would have been great. But, it didn’t come while I was at lunch, then when I got home after work there it was, the dreaded ‘sorry we missed you!’ card in my mailbox.
So, I took my card yesterday (Thursday) to the post office close by…only to be told I have to go to the other post office. Okay, I wouldn’t say I have a vendetta against this other post office, but I do hate it a whole lot. They’re mean, they send all postal notifications in Spanish, they delivered a super suspicious box to me and then gave me an attitude about coming to pick it up. I mean I’ve emailed the post master general about it. Yes, I actually did it. I think it helped, I don’t get nearly as much Spanish mail anymore.
So, today I’m going over to the post office of doom on my lunch break, because they close at 4:30 (what kind of crap is that? 9-4:30?!) and that’s when I get off work. Then, I can FINALLY get my little jelly roll and stripes and get to work.
Do you have any plans this weekend? My husband’s bff (do grown men have bffs? I think so) is spending a few days with us starting this weekend, and we have a nephew birthday party!
Happy sewing everyone!
